How to Reactivate Paid-Off Borrowers Without a Mail Campaign

Why your paid-off borrower list sits unused, why mail and branch staff can't work it, and how a call-based reactivation brings those customers back to a branch.

The short answer

Call them. Clean the list, then call every reachable past customer during branch hours with a specific offer, find the ones who are interested, and transfer them live to their own branch while it's open. An AI voice agent makes the volume possible; the branch still makes the loan. Sunset Finance placed 13,159 calls in 14 days this way.

The fastest way to bring paid-off borrowers back is to call them. All of them, not a sample. Clean the list first. Call during branch hours with one clear offer. When someone says "yes, I'm interested," put them on the phone with their own branch right then. That's the whole idea. The rest of this article is how to do it without burying your branch staff.

Your paid-off list is the cheapest loan you'll make this year

Think about who's on that list.

People who walked into one of your branches. Filled out the application. Got approved. Made their payments. Paid you off.

They already know your name. They know where the branch is. Some of them know your manager by first name.

That's not a cold lead. That's a relationship that went quiet.

And quiet doesn't mean gone. Life keeps happening to these people. A car repair. A school bill. A slow month. A lot of them will need a small loan again this year. The only question is whether they call you or whoever reaches them first.

There's a well-known line from Harvard Business Review on this: acquiring a new customer costs anywhere from five to 25 times more than keeping an existing one. That's a general business finding, not a lending study. But you don't need a study to feel it. Compare what you spend to get a brand-new applicant through the door with what it costs to reach someone already in your system.

So here's the strange part.

Most lenders have thousands of these people in their CRM. And the list just sits there.

Why the list sits there

It's not because anyone thinks past customers are a bad idea. Every operator knows they're good business.

It's because the two tools most lenders reach for don't fit the job.

Mail is slow and one-way. You design the piece, print it, send it, and wait. Weeks go by before you know who responded. The people who do respond call in whenever they get around to it, sometimes after hours, sometimes to a branch that's slammed. And the ones who had a question and no one to ask just set the letter down.

Mail can't hear "maybe." It can't answer "what's the rate?" It can't say "let me get you to your branch right now."

Branch staff can't dial thousands of numbers. Picture a Tuesday afternoon at a branch. Two people. A walk-in at the desk. A payment coming in. A collections call that has to happen today. The phone ringing.

Now hand them a printout of a few thousand past customers and say "call these when you have a minute."

They'll call a few. Maybe the ones they remember. Then the week gets away from them. That's not a people problem. It's a math problem. The list is bigger than the hours.

So the list waits for the next campaign. And the next. Meanwhile, every month it sits there, some of those borrowers take a loan from somebody else. You won't see that happen. You'll just notice the list never seems to turn into anything.

What a call-based reactivation looks like

Here's the simple version. There are four steps, and none of them is fancy.

First, clean the list. Old records are messy. Disconnected numbers. Duplicates. Customers you shouldn't be calling at all. People who belong to a branch that has since closed or merged. Before anyone dials, you sort out who's reachable, who belongs to which branch, and who comes off the list. This part is boring. It's also where a lot of these projects quietly fail.

Then, call everyone during branch hours. Not a sample. Everyone reachable on the list. This is where an AI voice agent earns its keep. It can place thousands of calls in the time a branch would place a few dozen. And it only calls while the branch is open, because the point is not to collect a callback request. The point is to connect a person to a person while there's someone at the branch to pick up. Customers who don't answer get called again. One missed call isn't a no.

Next, find the interested ones. The agent has one job on the call: say who's calling, make the offer, and find out if the person wants to talk about it. Most won't. That's fine. You're looking for the handful who say "actually, yes, now's a good time."

Finally, hand them live to their own branch. Not a generic call center. Not a voicemail box. Their branch. The same place they borrowed before. The customer stays on the line and the branch picks up. Now your team is talking to a warm, interested past borrower instead of chasing one.

If you want to see why the live handoff matters so much, we wrote about how the handoff works in the Academy.

One more thing happens quietly in the background. Every call gets logged. Who answered, who was interested, who got transferred, to which branch. That lands in the CRM the same day, so a regional manager can see which branches are getting transfers and which ones aren't picking up.

Sunset Finance: 43,000 past customers and one offer

This is the story we know best, because we ran it.

Sunset Finance is a network of consumer lending branches in Georgia. Like most lenders, they had a big list of past customers who had already borrowed once. 43,000 of them. Sitting unused.

The offer was simple: a pre-approved loan of up to $1,000.

The voice agent, Tommy, called past customers during branch hours, made that offer, and transferred the interested ones live to their own local branch while it was open.

Here's what the first two weeks looked like:

Pilot, first 14 days
Branches10
Calls placed13,159
Live transfers to branchesAbout 100
Transfers per 1,000 callsAbout 8

Since then: 224 live transfers and counting. And they went from 10 branches in the pilot to 28 branches now.

You're probably looking at "8 per 1,000" and thinking that sounds small.

It's supposed to. Most people on any old list won't want a loan today. The value isn't in the rate. It's in the fact that nobody on the branch team had to dial those 1,000 numbers to find those few people. The branch got the handful who wanted to talk. The agent made every other call.

The full write-up is in the Sunset Finance case study.

What to get right before you start

A few things decide whether this works. None of them are about the AI.

One clear offer. "We'd love to have you back" isn't an offer. "You're pre-approved for up to $1,000" is. Give the call a reason.

A branch that's ready to pick up. If the transfer rings and rings, you've just burned a warm customer. The branch needs to know transfers are coming and who answers them.

Calling only during branch hours. It sounds obvious. It's also the first thing that breaks when a tool is set up without thinking about how branches actually run.

Someone who owns the list. Who decides who's excluded? Who checks that the branch assignment is right? If nobody owns that, it doesn't get done.

Results that show up by branch. Total transfers is a nice number for a slide. Transfers by branch is the number that tells you where to look next week.

And a word on compliance. Calling rules apply to AI calls the same way they apply to people, and your offer language matters too. This article isn't legal advice. Run your list, your consent and your script past your own compliance team before anyone dials.

If you want the longer version of this playbook, it's in the Academy playbooks.

How to start small

You don't need to call all 43,000 on day one. Sunset didn't.

Start with one branch and its slice of the list. Clean it. Call it in two weeks. Count the live transfers that actually rang on that branch's phone. That number tells you whether to do the next branch.

That's also how we work. We start with one branch. Within 14 days, every reachable customer on that list gets called and the interested ones get transferred live to that branch. There's no upfront fee. You only pay for results: a booked meeting or a reactivated customer.

If you want to hear what your borrowers would hear, the AI will call you. Leave your number.

Questions lenders ask

Why not just send another mail campaign to paid-off borrowers?

Mail is slow and one-way. You wait weeks to learn who responded, and nobody can answer a question on the spot. A call gets an answer that day and can hand the interested customer straight to the branch.

Can't our branch staff call past customers themselves?

They can call a few. They can't call thousands while also handling walk-ins, payments, collections and the phones. The list is too big for the hours they have.

Does the AI make the loan decision?

No. The voice agent reaches the customer, checks interest and transfers them live to their own branch. The branch team talks to the customer and makes every decision.

What happened at Sunset Finance?

Sunset Finance had 43,000 past customers sitting unused. In the first 14 days of the pilot, 13,159 calls produced about 100 live transfers across 10 branches. They have had 224 live transfers since and grew from 10 branches to 28.

The proof

A Georgia lender already did this. Here are the numbers.

43,000past customers sitting on the list
13,159calls in the first 14 days
224live transfers to branches, and counting
10 → 28branches, pilot to today

In the pilot, about 8 live transfers for every 1,000 calls — the one ratio you can hold up against your own list. It's what happened at Sunset Finance, not a promise. Read the case study · Run your own list through it →

The offer

One branch. 14 days. Every customer called.

  1. Week 1Your list cleaned. Local number, caller ID and agent ready for that branch.
  2. Week 2The branch starts calling. Interested borrowers ring that branch's phone, live.
  3. Day 14You have the numbers — called, reached, transferred — by branch. You pay only for results.

$0 until it works. Then you pay per result: a booked meeting or a reactivated customer. No install fee, no monthly fee, nothing for calls or minutes.

Your next step

Talk to us before the list gets any older.

✓No risk to your network: nothing up front, and you only pay for results — a booked meeting or a reactivated customer. No results, nothing to pay.

The borrower who paid off last month already knows your branch. Every month the list sits, they're one month further from you and closer to someone else's offer.

Leave your number. Our AI calls you within minutes — you'll hear exactly what your borrowers would hear — and books a time with our team.

Someone is going to call your past customers. It should be the lender they already trust.
